Officials want student charged with attempted murder after teacher assaulted at high school
VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) – Officials have confirmed a 16-year-old student could face multiple charges, including attempted murder, after an incident that occurred after hours at a high school in Vincennes.
The Vincennes School Corporation Superintendent told News 10 Thursday morning that the incident happened on Wednesday at Lincoln High School.
The Vincennes Police Department reports they were called to the school around 4:30 p.m. for reports of a teacher who had been assaulted. When officers arrived on scene they were directed to a classroom where they located a female teacher who had been badly beaten and was semiconscious.
The suspect had been removed from the area and was detained. Officials report the teacher was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was later transferred to an Evansville hospital.
Vincennes Police Chief tells News 10 she is currently in the ICU listed in stable condition.
The juvenile suspect was taken to the hospital to be medically cleared and was then taken in for questioning. He was then transported to the Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village. The Vincennes Police Department is requesting the following charges based on their investigation: Attempted murder, robbery, battery with serious bodily injury, criminal confinement and strangulation.
VPD commented that the juvenile will remain detained and should go in front of a Knox County Judge within the next 48-hours.
The school corporation stated they could not comment further until the investigation is complete.But they did release this statement:
“We continue to keep the teacher involved in this incident in our thoughts and prayers and ask that you do the same.”
And the Vincennes Police Chief echoed with a similar statement:
I would take this opportunity to ask for thoughts and prayers to be with the teacher injured in the attack as well as Vincennes Community School staff members and students who are shaken by it. There were school staff members who acted quickly and are deserving of praise for their actions as well.
