Indy Film Fest at IMS

“Winning” is a 1969 classic film directed by James Goldstone about the Indianapolis 500. Frank Capua, played by Paul Newman, is a fictitious rising star in the racing circuit hoping to win the Indianapolis 500. The film shows his struggles and successes as a driver and, of course, tells a love story between Capua and a woman named Elora, played by Newman’s real-life wife Joanne Woodward.

The Indy Film Fest created Roving Cinema five years ago to take films outside the four walls of a theater.  This was a perfect opportunity to show “Winning” at IMS since it plays such a pivotal role in the film. The Indy Film Fest welcomes the chance to appreciate great films in relevant places. In the past, they’ve shown “Newsies” in the Indy Star newsroom, “The Neverending Story” at Indy Reads Books, “Labyrinth” in the catacombs under City Market, “Field of Dreams” at Victory Field and many more.

Capua’s fictitious race in the Indianapolis 500 is the climax of the movie. The film includes footage taken at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from the 1968 race. Additionally, a number of drivers and people associated with racing appear in the film, including Bobby Unser, Tony Hulman, Bobby Grim, Dan Gurney and more. An accident during one of the first scenes in the movie is from the 1966 Indianapolis 500 race.

Tickets are for sale on Event Brite. The link is on Indy Film Fest’s Facebook page or someone can find it by searching Roving Cinema: Winning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. VIP tickets are sold out, but general admission tickets are $25 for all ages. Tickets provide admission but guests need to bring their own seating for this outdoor event.

Guests will need to bring in their own lawn chairs or blanket to sit on for the film. This is an outdoor screening so bring what you need to be comfortable. IMS rules apply so they can bring in coolers and food. A complete list of what is and isn’t acceptable is on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway website under Gate Search Policy.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Moviegoers can watch a classic movie in an exclusive location during a noteworthy year. Additionally, moviegoers can expect some surprise visits from special guests!

The Indy Film Fest strives to create a shared experience around film and the Roving Cinema is the year-long program that brings films to unique, relevant locales.
