Delaware County buys police dog with $47k donation

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH)-A new K-9 Unit will soon be on the streets of Delaware County thanks to a $47,000 donation.

The county sheriff’s department purchased a new K-9 and a new police vehicle.

The dog is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois named Oh’Robby.

He will hit the streets this summer after he completes training with his handler, Deputy Dave Brown.

“You have no idea. I’m stoked,” Brown said. “That’s the word I’ve used the last few days. I’m super stoked.”

Brown has worked for the sheriff’s department for 16 years. He’s wanted to be a K-9 handler even longer than that. Now, his dream is coming true.

“Some of the guys made fun of me because I got him a bed,” he said. “A dog bed. A big pillow thing.”

Oh’Robby, who will be trained to find drugs and track down criminals, traveled to Muncie from Holland. He’s still learning English and Brown’s learning some Dutch.

“The bond is the key thing,” Brown said. “He doesn’t know that he’s going to catch a bad guy and get drugs and stuff. He only knows he’s going out to work for dad.”

The partnership is possible because of the Muncie Eagles Lodge. Members raised more than $47,000 from raffles and bingo. They gave it all to the sheriff’s department.

“The Eagles is here to serve the people,” Ron Hughes of the Eagles Lodge said. “The more we can do that, the more I feel happy. The more we give to the people, I feel great.”

Brown said Oh’Robby costs $15,000. The rest of the money goes to a new police car for Brown and Oh’Robby.

Their friendship won’t cost a dime.
