Books and fun with the Central Library Reading Program

Open a book and get ready to read! Children, teens and families are invited to experience the gift of reading and be a part of Indiana’s 200th birthday celebration during The Indianapolis Public Library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program, “Summer Reading Book Bash,” beginning Monday, June 6 and continuing through Saturday, July 30 at all IndyPL locations as well as the Beech Grove Public Library.

Headlining the festivities will be the furry fan favorite of readers worldwide, Garfield, created by Muncie, Indiana-based cartoonist Jim Davis. Garfield will inspire young readers to earn points for their reading activity, regardless of difficulty level, that can be exchanged for a variety of free prizes generously donated by community sponsors, many of which spotlight Indiana’s wonderful places, experiences and community attractions. Adults also can earn points for their younger children by reading aloud to them.

Readers seeking greater point rewards can choose from a list of notable Bonus Books that pay tribute to our Hoosier heritage, with many titles featuring an Indiana connection. Among other prizes to earn are tickets to an Indianapolis Indians game, including Library Night at Victory Field on Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m. sponsored by Finish Line Youth Foundation. Participants also can enter to win a giveaway drawing for two, 529 college savings accounts worth $529 each, sponsored by CollegeChoice CD 529 Savings Plan. These 529 college savings accounts are FDIC-insured through College Savings Bank, a Division of NexBank SSB.

The program also affords young people under the age of 18 the opportunity to reduce or eliminate their Library fines by using their reading points to participate in the Library’s Earn and Learn initiative.

In 2015, 56,695 young readers participated in the Library’s Summer Reading Program.
