Investigation underway after child injured at Tippecanoe Co. day care

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a child was injured at a Battle Ground area day care.

According to Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Detective Travis Dowell, a 1-year-old child was injured at the Loving Christian Day Care on Tuesday. Abigail Erwin says she noticed multiple bruises on her son’s face when she picked him up.

Erwin took her son to IU Health Arnett Hospital to be examined. Detective Dowell says the hospital contacted the sheriff’s office and deputies started investigating Thursday.

Detective Dowell says the day care owners told investigators the bruising was caused by a fall, but Erwin says her son’s injuries are not consistent with the day care owners’ story.

“Riley Hospital said these are extremely concerning and do not look like fall bruises,” Erwin said. “They’re not following up with bruises that would have happened from a fall.”

Detective Dowell says they are still interviewing people who would have been there when the boy’s injuries occurred. He says investigators are working with Child Protective Services to make sure the facility is not violating any state codes.

“If this were consistent with a fall, he would have some type of scratches somewhere else on his body,” Erwin said. “There’s not one scratch from his neck down. It’s his neck up strictly.”

However, Detective Dowell says it is not unusual for the hospital to contact law enforcement when a child is injured at a day care. Loving Christian Day Care is a state-licensed facility.
