Couple injured, house damaged after chemical explosion

CENTER GROVE, Ind. (WISH) – A couple was sent to the hospital after chemicals to treat their pool exploded.

According to 24-Hour News 8’s partner, The Daily Journal, the couple was mixing chemicals to treat their pool.

They had a small amount of one brand left and decided to mix it with the other brand of the same chemical.

When they mixed the chemicals in water, the mixture exploded, said Bargersville Fire Chief Jason Ramey.

The mixture exploded their kitchen sink out of the countertop and into the cabinet below. It also broke the window above the sink in their Golden Grove Estates home.

The couple was sent to the hospital for inhalation of chemicals, chemical burns and damaged hearing from the blast, Ramey said.

Both were released from the hospital Wednesday morning.

Ramey said the chemicals must have had a slight difference between the brands that caused the reaction and explosion.

“If they’re not exactly the same, I would caution people not to mix them,” Ramey said.

The home was aired out and closed up when the couple was sent to the hospital. Ramey said they are lucky the damage to their home wasn’t worse and their injuries weren’t more severe.
