Muncie animal control rescues more than 30 cats from mobile home

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) – Health workers deemed a Muncie mobile home a public nuisance after animal control rescued more than 30 cats from the property this week. A sign taped to the door reads “warning: keep out.”

The cats lived in deplorable conditions in a home littered with trash and feces, according to Muncie Animal Shelter Director Phil Peckenpaugh.

Two cats sat in the window Friday afternoon, one sat in an animal trap outside the home, and Peckenpaugh estimates more than a dozen others are hiding.

Shelter employees said they found one dead cat in a freezer and the rescued cats are being checked by a veterinarian.

Workers are asking for cat food donations, and they’re thanking one little girl from Muncie for her help.

Layla Doss heard about the cats’ living conditions and decided she could help.

Doss had raised $40 dollars from doing chores and babysitting. She planned on spending it on a new camera, until the cats changed her mind.

“I already have enough as it is. I’m very lucky and I feel like I should just give something to cats that aren’t as lucky,” Doss said.

Indy Humane took 25 cats from the Muncie shelter Frday.

Now Doss might clear out another cage. She turns 13 next week and she wants a cat for her birthday.

She’s considering giving one of the rescued cats a new home.

“It would just make me really happy to see that someone that really cares about these cats gets them and takes care of them,” she said.

Shelter workers said the owner has been cooperative. The investigation is ongoing and they’re not sure if he will face charges.

Even after the donation, the shelter needs more cat food. They can be reached at (765) 747-4851.
