Riders use new transit center for first time

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Julia M. Carson Transit Center is now open and bus riders were able to use the facility for the first time on Sunday.

The $26.5 million dollar transit center is located on East Washington Street, across the street from the City-County Building, and features 19 covered bus bays with real-time bus information, a heated or air-conditioned waiting room, message boards, ticket sales and free WiFi.

Bus riders said they are impressed with the new facility.

Reggie Luke said, “This is better than being where it used to be because you don’t have to worry about staying out if it’s raining. You’ll be inside. Or if it snows or is real cold you’ll be inside the building to keep warm”

IndyGo will offer free rides on all routes from Sunday, June 26 through Monday, July 4 to help riders adjust to the Julia M. Transit Center opening and route changes.

On Monday, July 4, the Transit Center and buses will observe Sunday hours (6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.) and schedules.

All week long, bus riders will enjoy performances from local artists to celebrate the opening week of the transit center, through a partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis. Performances will take place at the Transit Center as well as various downtown stops.
