IMPD connects with residents during Operation First Step

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is moving into the next phase of Operation First Step. Earlier this week, the initiative got 24 criminals, numerous guns and drugs off the streets.

On Saturday, police went back into those neighborhoods. They’re trying to increase officer visibility and build relationships with residents. Police say the follow-up process can be just as crucial as initial arrests.

“Today is important to let people know that we’re not going away. We are going to continue this. We are not only going to follow through, but we’re going to follow through effectively,” IMPD Captain Fred Ilnicki said.

Police say this phase also helps build trust with people in those neighborhoods.
