Dangerous intersection in Lawrence closed indefinitely

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – On Wednesday morning, Lawrence street crews shut down the intersection at 46th Street and Franklin Road.

The move comes after a series of crashes, including a car into a building.

The intersection will stay closed until Lawrence starts a major road project along that stretch. The work will include a raised road, improved visibility, and the destruction of an abandoned property.

It may take a couple of years for the project to start.

Currently, Lawrence doesn’t have the funding to make the project happen without federal funding. The city is in the process of identifying possible funding sources.

Over the years, the intersection has been the site of multiple accidents.

Under a previous mayoral administration there were plans for a massive road project along that stretch, but current Mayor Steve Collier discovered the plans for that project were underfunded.

Collier remains committed to fixing the intersection in the near future.
