Painter agrees to contract extension through the 2021-22 season

WEST LAFAYETTE (WLFI) – Purdue and its men’s basketball head coach, Matt Painter, have agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep the 45-year-old in West Lafayette through the 2021-22 season.

Chris Forman, associate athletics communications director at Purdue, confirmed the report to WLFI. He said the deal still had to be approved by the Purdue Board of Trustees later this summer.

Financial details are not yet available. Painter’s current contract was signed in 2011 and guarantees him $2.45 million for the 2016-17 season in base salary. Additional bonuses are available for the team’s academic performance and Big Ten and national tournament finishes, advancement and awards.

Purdue finished 26-9 last season prior to a disappointing overtime loss to Little Rock in the opening round of the tournament. It was the second straight season in which the Boilermakers could not hold a late lead in an eventual first-round loss.

Painter has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year three times and led Purdue to the 2009-10 regular season conference championship and 2009 Big Ten tournament title.
