Coroner: Inmate dies of drug overdose

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A Crawfordsville man who died in prison had a cocktail of drugs in his system.

Justin Addler, 32, was serving time at the Pendleton Correctional Facility for charges out of Tippecanoe County.

On May 16, officials at the prison said Addler barricaded himself in his cell with a weapon and refused orders to drop it. He eventually let officers inside, who took him to an observation cell.

When Addler later became unresponsive, paramedics took him to the hospital where he died.

The Madison County coroner told 24-Hour News 8’s sister station, WLFI, Addler died of acute methamphetamine and heroin intoxication.

Addler was serving time for dealing cocaine and carrying a handgun without a license. He was scheduled to be released in 10 years.
