Ambulance crashes while transporting victim of double shooting
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An ambulance crashed while transporting a victim involved in a double shooting on the northeast side.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department believes the victims, a male and a female, fled from the Clark Gas Station in the 2900 block of East 38th Street after the shooting. A shots fired call to that location was made just after 2 p.m.
While transporting one of the patients, an ambulance was involved in a multi-vehicle crash at 25th Street and Keystone Avenue around 2:15 p.m.
Carl Rochelle with Indianapolis EMS said no one was seriously injured in the ambulance crash. Rochelle said the ambulance swerved to miss an accident in the southbound lanes of Keystone Avenue and struck a pickup truck in the northbound lane head-on. Five people in total were in the ambulance.
Driver Phillip McGhee says he was northbound on Keystone Avenue when someone bumped him, pushing his truck towards the oncoming ambulance.
“I’m sliding over, I’m trying to avoid the ambulance, ambulance avoiding me and ‘bam’,” he said describing how the ambulance hit another vehicle while he ended up in a crash of his own.
The gunshot victim was placed in another ambulance and taken to a hospital.
“Fortunately in this instance, again everybody appears to be in good condition so the initial patient in the vehicle remained that primary concern,” said Rochelle.
On Wednesday morning, IMPD announced an arrest in the case. Detectives say 21-year-old Trevell Patton is believed to be the shooter.
31-year-old Lavon Beverly was shot at a bus stop at 38th Street and Oxford Street. The female was located at the intersection of 34th Street and Sherman Drive.Police say she was not shot but was struck by flying debris. They believe she had no direct involvement in the shooting.
Detectives say the shooting may have started because of an argument between the victim and suspect and other individuals who have yet to be identified.
“These bullets don’t have names on them. They don’t have directions. Whoever is careless and reckless with them, they could hit any number of innocent victims and really anytime somebody is shot they’re an innocent victim in my mind,” said IMPD Officer James Gillespie.
Police are looking for a person of interest who fled the scene in a black Chevy Impala.
Patton was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated battery.
