Tourniquet potentially helps save IMPD officer’s life

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An IMPD officer is recovering after being shot Monday evening.

One of the reasons the officer is expected to recover is because of the tourniquet a fellow officer used on him minutes after the shooting.

The kits were given to IMPD SWAT members seven years ago, and since then Indianapolis EMS has worked to make sure every new IMPD recruit has one and is trained to use it.

“Teaching folks how to be comfortable with those devices, teaching judgment, teaching how to operationalize the device relatively quickly with little thinking is just incredibly important,” said IEMS Chief Charles Miramonti.

Miramonti added that the kits aren’t only used on officers, but have saved the lives of numerous other victims as well.
