Woman trying to catch stray dog hit, killed by train

SUTHERLIN, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a train collided with a car in southwest Oregon, killing a woman who had parked on the railroad tracks and couldn’t move the vehicle in time.

Sutherlin police identified the victim as 63-year-old Adele Osborne of Oakland, Oregon. The department says she parked Hyundai sedan on the tracks Saturday afternoon and left the vehicle to catch a stray dog.

When Osborne noticed a northbound train approaching, she tried to get back into the car and move it.

The train operated by Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad couldn’t stop in time, striking the woman and her vehicle.

The News-Review of Roseburg reports that some roadways were blocked for five hours after the crash.

The investigation remains active.
