Video: Comet plunges into the sun

(CNN) — A comet, traveling more than 1 million miles per hour plunged into the sun this week.

NASA witnessed the event.

In the video, the comet enters from the right and then disappears. The white circle represents the sun.

It looks like the comet fell into the sun, but really it went around it. The sun’s heat torn it apart and vaporized it.

The comet was first spotted on Aug. 1.

It is part of a group of comets with related orbits that broke off a huge comet several centuries ago.
