Woman dies after crashing into pool on city’s east side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Officials say a woman who crashed her car into a pool on the city’s east side died August 6.

According to the Marion County Coroner’s Office, Shainne Gaither died Saturday.

She was in critical condition after the car she was driving went off the road, sideswiped a house, and plunged into a swimming pool.

It happened around 8 p.m. August 4 in the 8500 block of East 16th Street.

Two witnesses, five Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and an Indianapolis Fire Department lieutenant all jumped into the water to try and pull the woman from the submerged car.

They were able to break a window and cut the woman’s seat belt with help of tools from the fire department.

The woman was not breathing and did not have a pulse when they pulled her from the water. After CPR first responders were able to get a pulse from the woman. She was taken to Community East Hospital in critical condition.

There was one adult and four children in the home with the pool when the accident happened. They told officials they heard a car hit their home and when they looked out the window they saw a silver car go through a fence and into their pool.

Officials said right now it’s unclear how fast the car was going or what caused it to veer off the road.

One man found near the scene was taken into custody for questioning. Officials have not released what role, if any may have had in the crash
