Multiple car break-ins reported near northeast side stores

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Shoppers at some northeast side stores are baffled after multiple car break-ins.

Christie, who asked us not to use her last name, is having a hard time accepting what happened. “Sorry, don’t like crying,” she said while speaking with 24-Hour News 8 on Monday.

The young woman was eating Sunday at Le Peep when her waitress broke the news.

“My heart raced,” Christie said. “I was scared. It was just like an adrenaline rush coming out to see what had happened knowing that I had really important, expensive items in my car.”

And sure enough, after seeing glass beside her car, Christie knew her $1,500 worth of electronics were gone.

“If they had a heart, they could at least turn it in anonymously to the police where I could get back the things that mattered to me,” Christie said.

She’s not the only victim. IMPD had a number of car break-in reports come in over the weekend. While they happened in different locations, there was a similar pattern: all took place in broad daylight, in parking lots.

“Even though they are back-to-back, or they’re in the same general neighborhood, sometimes they’re not related,” IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams said.

It’s a type of crime officers say is so common, they tell their own to lock doors and hide items.

“We’re giving them the same reminder,” IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams said. “We can’t operate as though we’re in a bubble that crime is not going to impact us. It can impact you anywhere and any time and any day.”

It’s a lesson unfortunately learned the hard way. “I’ll just be that girl that carries her suitcases into restaurants from now on,” Christie said.

While these cases have officers busy now, they know it’s only going to get worse. During the holidays, they’ll do more parking lot patrols and even pass out reminders to shoppers.

If you have any information about this weekend’s break-ins, call Crimes Stoppers 262-TIPS (8477).
