IMPD officer uses stun gun to stop suspect from choking officer

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer was assaulted by a theft suspect Wednesday.

According to police, IMPD officers were sent to the Dollar General in the 2100 block of North Mitthoeffer Road after reports of a theft in process.

Police were told the suspect was a black male and was drinking alcohol in the store, then grabbed a charging cable off a display shelf and left the store without paying for it.

After the incident, an IMPD officer found the suspect, 55-year-old Donald Brown in the parking lot and tried to arrest him for being involved in the theft from the store. Police said as the officer tried to handcuff him, Brown began to choke the officer with his hands. Police said the officer hit Brown in the head to loosen Brown’s grip on the officer’s neck. The officer and Brown then fell to the ground, where the officer tried to handcuff Brown.

During the incident, two IMPD officers arrived on scene. One officer used a stun gun to stop Brown from assaulting the officer. The three officers were then able to handcuff Brown.

Brown was transported to the Arrestee Processing Center. He was arrested for the following reasons:

  • Strangulation
  • Batter on a law enforcement officer
  • Resisting law enforcement
  • Theft

Police said Brown was also on house arrest for a conviction for assaulting an IMPD officer in February.

One officer sustained a minor knee injury during the altercation with Brown.

Brown was uninjured.
