Toddler dies after being suffocated by bean bag chair

WEST JORDAN, UT (WCMH) – Police say a daycare worker reading to other kids, sat on the bean bag chair the boy was under and accidentally suffocated him.

According to KTSU, Leonardo Sanchez, who would have turned two later this month, crawled underneath the bean bag chair Thursday, and was sat on by a daycare employee who didn’t realize the boy was there.

Danielle Sanchez, the boy’s mother, says she can’t understand how the daycare lost track of her son. She says she’s not upset with the employee, but the daycare should have done more to prevent this from happening.

The daycare center released the following statement in regards to the incident:

We regret deeply the tragic death of a young toddler at our daycare facility. No words adequately describe the depth of the sorrow we feel. And, of course, we do not pretend to understand how devastating this is for the family. We know the family well, we grieve with them, and we pray that God will provide them the comfort and peace they inevitably will need.
