6-vehicle crash closes far southeast side intersection

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A chain-reaction crash on the far southeast side of Indianapolis left six vehicles damaged and one person injured Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Southport Road and Emerson Avenue just after 8:45 a.m.

A pickup truck heading north on Emerson Avenue hit a cargo van parked in the turn lane of the intersection, causing chain-reaction collisions with four other vehicles in the turn lane, according to police.

The van driver was taken to St. Francis Health-Indianapolis in unknown condition, and the truck driver was checked out by medics on scene and released. No one else was hurt.

Emerson Avenue was temporarily closed at Southport Road as crews cleaned up a large amount of fuel leaking from the truck and van.

Officials have not said what caused the crash. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to have been involved, police said.
