Historic ‘LOVE Statue’ to get new indoor home

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A central Indiana landmark is moving indoors. The ‘LOVE Statue’ that sits outside the Indianapolis Museum of Art will undergo what officials are calling ‘conservation treatment.’

According to the IMA, Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture will temporarily go off view from the Dudley and Mary Louise Sutphin Mall to undergo conservation treatment.

The sculpture is made up of Cor-Ten steel. Indiana was one of the first to work with the material and at the time little was known about how the steel would stand the test of time outside.

Over time the statue has corroded due to Indianapolis’ changing climate. The IMA said this has altered the intended appearance of the work.

The IMA has worked with several consultants to bring back the integrity of the sculpture. They also recommended that the sculptor find a new home inside.

Following the conservation treatment the LOVE sculpture’s new home will be inside the Pulliam Family Great Hall.
