Roudebush medical center doctor: Opioids hit veterans hard

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Earlier this year, President Donald Trump proclaimed this November as National Veterans and Military Families Month.

On Friday, veterans’ health officials in Indiana held an open house to highlight the health care efforts being done for veterans. It took place at the Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center.

The acting chief of staff at the center said veterans have been hit hard by the opioid crisis, but the VA has been able to hit back.

Dr. Imtiaz Munshi said, “This has not come easily. It’s challenging both on the veterans’ part, the patients’ part, but also on the staff’s part. Stopping opioids is a challenging and difficult process for anyone who had been taking them for a long period of time.”

More than 60,000 veterans are taken care of by the VA in Indianapolis.
