IMPD officers, local citizens honored for acts of bravery

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A collection of Indianapolis Metropolitan police officers and private citizens were honored for going above and beyond the call of duty.

IMPD Honor Awards Program took place at Clowes Auditorium at the Indianapolis Central Library on Friday morning. The celebration awarded officers and civilians in various categories. Officers were honored for Unit Citations, Medal of Merit, Medal of Bravery, Medal of Valor and Medal of Honor.

Civilians were awarded with certificates of appreciation and certificate of outstanding performance.

Douglas Greenwood was one civilian honored by IMPD. Back on Aug. 14, 2016, Greenwood witnessed a head-on collision on eastbound Interstate 70. He pulled a mother, a grandmother, a child and dog out of the burning vehicle. And Greenwood went back to pull the grandmother out of the vehicle, even as others told me it was too dangerous.

On Friday, Greenwood reunited with the family he saved, including the grandmother who wanted him again.

“He’s my guardian angel,” said Martha Brice.

IMPD Chief Bryan Roach added that these kind of stories need to be told more often.

“Unless you go through all of the police reports, you never hear about these stories,” said Roach.

After Friday’s celebration, the attendees enjoyed a reception together.
