Cancer resource center assisting patients, caregivers turns 1-year-old

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The resource center located on the ground floor of IU Health Simon Cancer Center is celebrating its one-year anniversary Friday. The center is a one stop shop for anything a cancer patient or a caregiver might need.

They offer wellness programs like art therapy, yoga, massage and Tai chi. They also have a lot of pamphlets and other reading materials to help people live with cancer. One of the most interesting resources they offer are wigs, wig fittings.

Volunteer Dan Davis is a retired Indianapolis firefighter. He says volunteering at the center and being on the force isn’t all that different.

“Mostly listen,” said Davis when asked how volunteers can help best. “Because especially with caregivers sometimes they are under a lot of pressure and a lot of stress and sometimes they just need to tell you their story and that has happened with patients as well and sometimes a good listening ear is all that they’re looking for.”

Five different organizations came together for the resource center. You don’t have to be an IU patient to use the resource center. It’s open to anyone struggling with cancer.
