IMPD investigating person shot on city’s northeast side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) –Police are looking for a suspect in a drive-by shooting that happened Monday afternoon.

It happened just after 1:30 p.m.on Grand Avenue near Emerson Avenue and 38th Street.

Police say the victim, who is in his late teens, was walking along Grand Avenue, when the suspect drove up, got out of his car and fired multiple rounds. The victim suffered multiple gun shot wounds and is in critical but stable condition. His identity has not been released.

Travis Pender and his son happened to be working in the neighborhood. He stepped outside right before the shooting and watched as the suspect pulled the trigger.

“I grabbed my son and pulled him into the house and said, ‘Get down. Get down,’” he said.

Pender said there were no signs that anything was about to go down.

“There was absolutely nothing going on. There was a group of people walking this way. A guy pulled up in a car and got out and started shouting. There was no arguing. There was no yelling,” he said.

Police aren’t sure what happened before the violence or who the suspect targeted the teen. After being shot, police say the victim ran toward Butler Avenue, which is a street over. They say he collapsed in the alley. He was rushed to Sidney& Lois Eskenazi Hospital, where he’s expected to live.

“Really by professional medical staff and the grace of God, this individual is still living,” said Sgt. Kendale Adams of IMPD.

Which comes as both a relief and reality check for Pender.

“You wake up on the morning, flip on the news, hear about a shooting. You go to work, and actually see it. It’s pretty bad that you’re not just hearing about it. You are actually watching it,” said Pender.
