Monroe County officials confirm 14 cases of mumps

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Monroe County health officials announced more confirmed cases of mumps Tuesday.

Fourteen cases have now been confirmed in the greater Monroe County area, including at least eight at Indiana University, officials said.

“It is important to check your vaccination records and confirm that you and your children have received the recommended doses of vaccine,” county health administrator Penny Caudill said in a media release.

The cases do not appear to be linked.

“Anyone who develops mumps symptoms — even if they have received MMR vaccine — should stay home and immediately call their healthcare provider. Please do not arrive at your provider’s office, an urgent care clinic, or the emergency room without calling first if you have symptoms,” Caudill said.

Officials say symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite and swollen or tender salivary glands under the ears.

Mumps have also been confirmed in recent weeks at IUPUI, Butler and Amy Beverland Elementary School.
