UPDATE: Indianapolis police said on Nov. 7 that 38-year-old Antoine Beech is charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. A court date has not been set.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man with active warrants was shot by police Thursday morning at a gas station on the south side of Indianapolis.

Around 7 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were wrapping up an unrelated robbery investigation at a Speedway gas station, 2053 Shelby Street, when someone told them a man in a car in the parking lot had an active warrant.

The man was later identified as 38-year-old Antoine Beech.

The officer was later identified as Patrol Officer Ryan Thomas, who has been with the department for eight years.

Officers approached Beech, who was seated in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet Impala. At the same time, other IMPD officers in the parking lot saw a gun within Beech’s reach and “gave him verbal instructions not to reach for the gun,” IMPD Public Information Officer Lt. Shane Foley said.

“Beech allegedly reached for the gun and one officer discharged his department-issued firearm, striking Beech,” Foley said.

Beech was stable when transported to Eskenazi Hospital.

Detectives later found a gun inside the vehicle, Foley says, and Beech has two active warrants for his arrest.

Investigators will review surveillance video from the gas station, video from body-worn cameras, and evidence from the scene to put together a more complete picture of what happened.

The shooting is also being investigated by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, the IMPD Critical Response Team, and IMPD Internal Affairs.

Thursday’s incident is the second police shooting in Indianapolis in the last five days. Foley says he knows the community has questions after police shootings and the department is constantly looking for ways to improve.

“If there are things, training steps we need to improve as an agency, things in our community we need to do to educate our community more, we want to try to identify what those things are so that we can reduce these incidents,” Foley said.
