IU basketball player Mackenzie Mgbako arrested in Bloomington

IU basketball player out of jail after arrest

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana University Basketball freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako was arrested early Sunday morning in Bloomington, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

Bloomington police confirmed to News 8 that 18-year-old Mgbako was arrested around 2:15 a.m. Sunday for two misdemeanors, criminal trespassing and resisting law enforcement. Officers were called to a Taco Bell located at 3001 E. Third Street on a report of a man refusing to leave.

When they arrived, restaurant managers informed police that they were refusing service to a man in the drive-thru who was cursing and being rude to employees.

The man refused to identify himself but was later identified by police as Mgbako. Police told Mgbako to exit the drive-thru line, which he did, but refused to leave the property after Taco Bell managers requested he leave.

Police say that Mgbako “began to drive out of the lot, but then reversed his vehicle and parked again,” staying on the property for another 15 minutes.

Officers attempted to arrest Mgbako but he still refused to exit his vehicle. Eventually, police say they used a baton to break open a car window to give Mgbako commands. According to police, officers had to forcibly remove Mgbako from his vehicle. Eventually, he was taken into custody.

Monroe County jail officials told News 8 that Mgbako was booked into the jail at 3:16 a.m. Sunday on a $1,000 surety bond and $500 cash. Jail records show Mgbako bonded out at 5:25 a.m.

In a statement to News 8, IU Athletics said, “IU Athletics is aware of the situation. We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”

Mgbako is a five-star forward from Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey.
