Lawrence police searching for suspect in armed carjacking near 52nd Street, Mitthoeffer Road
LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — The Lawrence Police Department is searching for a suspect following an armed carjacking early Monday morning.
One other person connected to the carjacking has been apprehended.
Lawrence police told News 8 that around 11 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to a residential area near East 52nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road on a report of an armed carjacking.
The person involved said that their black Mazda Hatchback was stolen from them by two people at gunpoint. Following this, investigators placed the Mazda’s license plate number into a national database so it could be tracked if seen on camera.
Later around 3 a.m., police located the stolen vehicle, a Mazda Hatchback, on camera in Beech Grove.
Beech Grove officers attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the driver would not stop, prompting a brief chase. They later found the Mazda on Victory Drive, a dead end street just south of Emerson Avenue and Interstate 465.
The people then abandoned the Mazda and fled on foot.
Police then dispatched K-9 officers and a drone to search for the suspects, and were able to locate the two with the drone.
Officers took one of the people into custody. The other is still on the loose.
Investigators located a rifle in the car during the search. Officers say they do not believe there is a threat to the community.
Police cite technology as the key factor in finding the car so quickly.
They are working to gather information on the remaining suspect.
