Overnight house fire closes State Road 9 in Greenfield

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An overnight house fire in Greenfield forced police to shut down a stretch of State Road 9 in both directions early Monday morning.

State Road 9 was closed from US 40/Main Street and Fourth Street due to fire hoses being laid across the road, the Greenfield Fire Department says.

Firefighters arrived at the scene just after 5:15 a.m. and State Road 9 was shut down a short time later.

“When crews first arrived, they had a working fire with flames out a bathroom window. This building was converted to three apartments from the original single family home. The fire was quickly extinguished by the ladder crew with a water can as they were searching the apartment,” GFD said in a release.

There was no one inside the building and no one was hurt, firefighters at the scene told News 8.

State Road 9 reopened just before 7 a.m.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
