Man found guilty of attempted murder of police officer

Mylik Hill found guilty of shooting officer

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A jury on Thursday night convicted a 33-year-old Indianapolis man for the attempted murder of an Indianapolis police officer in 2022, online court records show.

Mylik Hill was accused of shooting Officer Tommy Mangan in the neck during the late-night hours of Feb. 27, 2022, near an alley on Woodlawn Avenue in the Fountain Square area. He was later apprehended with cooperation from residents in a backyard in the 900 block of Dawson Street.

According to online court records, he was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder; six counts of resisting law enforcement; and a count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. His trial lasted three days.

His sentencing hearing was set for 1 p.m. March 11 in Marion Superior Court 27.

Hill represented himself. He testified Thursday, asking himself questions and then answering them.

“Mylik Hill, was you shot under your arm on Feb. 27 ? Yes. Mylik Hill, will you show the gunshot wounds of what you saying?”

At that point, Hill got up and took off his shirt to show a gunshot wound. Judge Angela Dow Davis even helped him take off his tie.

Earlier on Thursday, Hill had second thoughts on representing himself. The judge asked Hill if he wanted to bring on his stand-by counsel.

“All I’m asking is that I get a little time to make a decision, and Rachel can come tell me and explain to me ’cause I want to be understood, what I’m doing.”

The judge responded, “You can have the lunch period, but we are finishing this trial today.”

Hill decided to continue to represent himself.

He’s accused of shooting the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer in the throat during a foot chase following a traffic stop.

Before his March sentencing, Hill will face a hearing on the possible enhancement of the time he’ll spend in prison. The court will determine if he’s a habitual offender who qualifies for a longer prison sentence.

After found guilty Thursday night, Hill waived his right to represent himself for the hearing to consider a sentence enhancement, online court records show.

“Officer Mangan’s life was forever changed that night when he answered the call to serve his community. I want to thank the investigators, witnesses, trial team, and the jury for their roles in securing justice for Officer Mangan, his family, and his law enforcement family.”

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears, a Democrat

“On behalf of the IMPD, we join the Mangan and Majors families and all the brave women and men who wear the badge expressing a sense of relief that justice was served.

“This verdict should send a strong message that attacks on law enforcement officers will not be tolerated in Indianapolis. I want to express our gratitude to the jury for their service and for their careful review of the facts in this case. We are grateful they found the defendant guilty on all counts.

“Tonight’s verdicts bring Officer Thomas Mangan and Field Training Officer (FTO) Daniel Majors one step more towards closure in this harrowing situation.

“The gunshot wound inflicted upon Officer Mangan’s throat caused significant damage and has required multiple surgeries. He continues to work with doctors to heal from the physical and emotional repercussions of this traumatic injury. Yet, through it all, Tommy and his wife Emory have been steadfast in their faith, gracious, and loving.

“This incident reminds us of the profound risks our officers confront each day in service to our community. Their unwavering commitment to others can come at a great cost to themselves and their families – we cannot underestimate or forget the sacrifices they make to keep us safe.

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 86 in Indianapolis

We are thankful to be able to stand on faith in Christ alone and be carried along by the prayers and support of IMPD, the FOP, IFD, family, church, friends, and the community. Dan Majors has been a steadfast example of unwavering support and bravery. He risked his life to save mine.

Today has brought our family a sense of relief.  Emory and I are grateful for the jury’s verdict.  We appreciate the hard work done by the detectives, officers, prosecutors, community members, and everyone else involved bringing this case to resolution.

We would not have been able to make it through the last two years and especially these past three days without each and every one of you.

I’ve reflected on my first words after being shot and not being able to talk for 2 months. These words seem very appropriate now:

“Hallelujah! Thank you, Jesus, sweet sweet Jesus.”

While the road to recovery continues, today’s verdict gives us a sense of peace.  We have found solace in God’s faithfulness and His mercies which are new every morning.
