Hendricks County deputy dies after being electrocuted at crash scene
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Hendricks County Sheriff’s deputy died late Monday after coming into contact with downed power lines at the scene of a single-vehicle crash.
Hendricks County Sheriff Jack Sadler held a press conference at Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis early Tuesday morning and confirmed the death of Deputy Fred Fislar.
Sheriff Sadler says the crash happened around 11:50 p.m. Monday just north of State Road 267 near Plainfield.
A spokesperson with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office told News 8 that the vehicle had crashed into a utility pole, knocking it down the powerlines. At some point, Fislar came in contact with the powerline.
About five minutes after arriving on scene, a witness reported seeing Fislar down, according to Sadler.
Fislar was transported in critical condition to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m. Tuesday.
The driver of the crashed vehicle was taken to a hospital in serious and stable condition.
Indianapolis police officers later escorted Fislar’s body from the hospital to the Marion County Coroner’s Office. Police officers later escorted Fislar from Indianapolis to the Hendricks County Coroner’s Office in Danville.
“This is a sad day for the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office,” Sadler said. “Our heart is broken.”
Fislar had been with the sheriff’s office for 2½ years. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
