SOUTHPORT, Ind. (WISH) — The mayor of the Marion County city of Southport has reinstated Police Chief Tom Vaughn, days after he was demoted.

The information was revealed Thursday night at the start of a meeting of the Southport City Council.

Southport Mayor Jim Cooney said he met with Vaughn Thursday afternoon: “We came to an agreement of reinstatement, of which we will have the details of in the morning. I’m very excited about it.”

Cooney said Wednesday that the firing of the Marion County city’s longtime police chief wasn’t political but was because he didn’t provide a document the Republican leader wanted. Several residents spoke out against the firing, but Cooney said while the testimony was impactful, it didn’t sway his decision.

“No, it did not, nope. He extended the olive branch through the acting chief, and he sat down and three of us talked it all out this afternoon.”

Vaughn has served as police chief for 11 years. He said he’s grateful for the community’s support:

“It’s overwhelming and humbling at the same time. You never know the impact you have on somebody until something like this happens, and the show of support I think shows that the police department does it right.”

Southport is a city of about 2,000 residents on the south side of Marion County.
