Teenager found fatally shot on Brook Crossing Lane during trick-or-treating

Man dead after Halloween night shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This story has been updated to include the name of the deceased.

A teenager with at least one gunshot wound died Thursday night after he was found lying in a street in a neighborhood on the far east side of the city, Indianapolis police say.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 17-year-old Dashawn Gilbert.

Medics and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to a report of a person shot just before 7:35 p.m. Thursday in the 11500 block of Brook Crossing Lane. That’s in the BrookWood Crossing housing subdivision off Cumberland Road south of East 21st Street.

The shooting happened during treat-or-treating for Halloween in the neighborhood. Police do not think children on the streets for the observance saw the shooting happen.

IMPD Capt. Rob Rider said, “Halloween is supposed to be a time where you are out with your family and having fun. It’s a great time for the kids, and to have a violent, tragic event happen in their neighborhood really is very disturbing.”

On Friday, IMPD said in a news release, “It was initially believed the person down was struck by a vehicle.”

No arrest has been made, but police do not believe a lingering threat to the public exists. IMPD has not publicly shared whether a suspect is being sought.

Anyone with information was asked to call IMPD Detective Jose Torres at 317-327-3475 or e-mail the detective at jose.torres@indy.gov.
