INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person was killed Friday morning when their car hit the back of a stalled vehicle on northbound I-65 and then spun into the path of an oncoming semitruck.

Around midnight, 911 dispatchers received a call from a person inside a stalled vehicle that had stopped in the left lane of I-65 just north of West Street.

While the person was on the phone with dispatchers, the vehicle was hit from behind, according to Indiana State Police.

That collision spun the second vehicle into the path of an oncoming semitruck. The semi hit the vehicle and both became engulfed in flames.

The driver of the second vehicle was trapped in the wreckage and did not survive, according to state police.

The truck driver was able to get out and was not seriously injured. The driver of the stalled vehicle also escaped serious injury.

State police say investigators aren’t sure what caused the first vehicle to stall, but a malfunction caused the car to shut off and none of the lights would work, leaving it in the left lane with no lights.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office and state police are working to identify the deceased person.

The northbound lanes of I-65 were closed between the North Split and 21st Street for over six hours but have since reopened.
