Suspect fatally shot by ISP during gas station standoff on I-65

FRANKFORT, Ind. (WISH) — This story has been updated with further information.

A suspect was fatally shot following a brief chase on Interstate 65 and standoff with Indiana State Police at a gas station just outside of Frankfort.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

The shooting happened sometime after 11 a.m. near the 157.9-mile marker of I-65 near State Road 28.

A spokesperson with the Indiana State Police told News 8 that the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop turned chase that ended near the BP gas station at the SR 28 exit.

There was a standoff between troopers and the suspect for an unclear amount of time. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including SWAT, were on the scene.

At some point, both officers and the suspect inside the vehicle exchanged gunfire. The suspect was struck at least once and pronounced dead at the scene.

ISP Sgt. John Perrine told News 8 that no officers were injured.

State Road 28 just east of I-65 was closed while investigators were on the scene. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
