Police: 14-year-old boy believed to be shooter in Dollar General murder

CUMBERLAND, Ind. (WISH) — A 14-year-old boy is believed to be the gunman in a robbery turned murder at a Dollar General store.

Cumberland Police Department Chief Michael Crooke says charging documents are being prepared against the boy.

Police will forward those charging documents to the juvenile court. It is up to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if the boy will be taken to adult court.

37-year-old Gregory Raley was killed Monday night. Police believe he was trying to intervene during a robbery of the store.

Police say he was coming out of the store, then taken around the corner where he was robbed and shot. He was found laying on the ground outside the store and later died.

Four persons of interest were ultimately identified. The 14-year-old and 18-year-old Steven Sheppard were arrested in the case. Sheppard will also be charged.

On Tuesday, News 8’s Tim McNicholas spoke with Raley’s brother.

“My brother was such a great man. I’ll never get over it. I’m really trying not to have hatred for anybody,” Richard Raley said. “I’m praying for justice.”

Richard said the Raley brothers grew up in New Castle. He said Gregory ran a landscaping service and often worked in Cumberland.

Dollar General declined to make a statement about the crime.
