City, Indiana Black Farmers’ Co-op partner to bring fresh food to northeast side
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — There’s an effort to bring fresh produce to an area of the city after the recent closing of a Kroger.
The Kroger near 46th Street and Arlington Avenue closed a few weeks ago. According to Kroger, the store was closed because of ongoing poor financial performance.
Wednesday morning, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, along with the Office of Public Health and Safety, City County Councilor Stephen Clay and the Indiana Black Farmers’ Co-op will be announcing a mobile market for the area.
The mission of the Indiana Black Farmers’ Co-op is to educate the community on growing and preserving food and working with urban farmers to increase the amount of fresh produce in food desert areas.
According to the city, the city’s Office of Public Health and Safety has also been working on programs and partnerships that improve food access.
There is a market planned for this Sunday, Sept. 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Zion Hope Church.
The address is 5950 East 46th Street.
Vendors and food trucks wanting to participate can contact the Indiana Black Farmers’ Co-op at Inblkfarmers@gmail.com.
