Opportunity to see Geminid meteor shower at Monroe Lake
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) – There is a meteor shower expected Tuesday through Wednesday. Monroe Lake will be hosting an event to the public to watch the shower.
The Geminid meteor shower may be hard to see due to the clouds, but if the clouds break it could still be hard to see some of the dimmer meteors because of yet another Super Moon. A Super Moon is when a full moon is slightly closer to Earth than usual.
The Geminids produce up to 120 meteors per hour at its peak, according to NASA. Its created by debris left behind an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon.
The annual shower runs between Dec. 7 through Dec. 17.
Monroe Lake will host a viewing for the meteor shower at Paynetown State Recreation Area from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will take place text to Deer Run Shelter.
There will be an expert at the event who will explain the science behind the meteor shower and provide a fire and hot chocolate.
You are encouraged to bring folding chairs and blankets.
