State Fire Marshal inspectors walk through haunted houses

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Code enforcement inspectors walked through several haunted houses on Tuesday.

WISH-TV crews were there as they inspected the House of Trepidation on South Meridian Street and Bluff Road Tuesday morning.

Representatives for the Indiana State Fire Marshal checked the fire alarm and suppression system, they looked for electrical issues and made sure all of the props were flame retardant.

One of the biggest issues inspectors said they find in haunted houses is improper exits. Each attraction must have enough for their size and those exits must be clearly labeled.

The owner of the House of Trepidation said he begins working with the State Fire Marshals office in May to make sure they meet all the requirements.

“We always invite them out about the middle of May. We build year round so about mid-May we call down, have them come out and take a look at what we’re doing that way if they’ve got any changes of updates they want us to change we’ve got plenty of time to get it done before the big show starts,” said Ken Carter.

The House of Trepidation opens Wednesday through Halloween night from 6:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. It is extended to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Tickets start at $11.
