IMPD officer faces attempted murder charge
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department remains behind bars in Ohio Saturday night after being accused of shooting a detective and fleeing to Cincinnati.
IMPD says 42-year-old Adrian Aurs was off-duty when he shot a detective, hitting him at least once in the arm. Police say he used his own personal firearm, not the department issued handgun.
The detective was at an apartment on Valley Brook Way investigating a domestic incident between Aurs and his estranged wife.
Police say Aurs’ estranged wife and two kids were in the apartment at the time of the shooting. IMPD says their detective returned fire, but did not hit Aurs. They tell us Aurs then left the scene in his personal car. The detective has not been identified.
“We came outside to see what was going on and my daughter and her boyfriend noticed that the corner apartment down there, the window was shot out. Tons of fire department and police officers were here,” Rhonda Stickles, who lives nearby, explained.
IMPD had the neighborhood taped off as a crime scene into the early morning hours on Saturday.
Aurs was later found driving in Cincinnati. He was taken into custody unharmed after a standoff on I-75 with Cincinnati police.
He is now facing an attempted murder charge.
“Come on now. You are law enforcement. You are a police officer. Why would you do this? You uphold the law and we respect people like you for upholding the law, so why would you go out and do this? This is awful, disgusting,” Spencer Edwards, another resident of the apartment complex, said.
Aurs is behind bars in Cincinnati. He will be extradited back to Indianapolis in the coming days. He has been placed on unpaid leave with IMPD, pending termination.
The detective injured in the shooting is in good condition. Police are not releasing his name, but they say he has been with the department for 20 years.
The Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police #86 released the following statement Saturday:
Our collective membership is deeply troubled by the events of Friday night which resulted in the shooting of an IMPD Detective. The actions of the criminal suspect in this matter do not represent the values and ethos of the women and men of our organization or our policing profession. We are confident the full measure of the applicable laws will be utilized to ensure proper justice is fulfilled. In the interim, we take solace in the actions of the detective who bravely stood the line defending the other victims involved. Although wounded, the detective remained faithful to his oath and this community. Our thoughts are with all the families involved, especially the children. We ask for the continued support of our City as our wounded officer and this department begin to heal from this terrible incident.
