IndyGo asks public to vote on Red Line design

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IndyGo is asking for the public’s help deciding what the city’s latest mass transit effort will look like.

Crews will start construction on the first phase of the Red Line next year. IndyGo says there will be 28 stops stretching from Broad Ripple to the University of Indianapolis.

IndyGo is asking the public to vote on the design for Red Line bus stops. IndyGo put out a call for designs and received ideas from all over the world. The company narrowed down the designs to 24 feasible options, and now the public can vote for their favorite.

The winning design will get a $5,000 prize.

24-Hour News 8 showed the designs to riders at the downtown transit center.

“[The designs are] very modern. I think they fit well in the city…the public is what uses the system,” one rider said.

“I think it’s a good idea that they ask the public,” said another rider.

Several people said they liked the modern designs and they’re hoping the Red Line will be a turning point for mass transit in Indianapolis.

“We’ve really been lacking a decent mass transit. I’ve always called it the untransit, or un-mass-transit because it doesn’t move the masses around,” said Leslie Keith Shaw, who rides the bus every day.

IndyGo says the Red Line will have their own lanes to cut down on congestion, and the buses will run every 10 minutes for 20 hours a day.

“It’s really reliable. You think of the subway or light rail. It’s not mixed with traffic. That helps attract ridership because the travel time is actually faster at times than driving,” said Bryan Luellen with IndyGo.

IndyGo is hosting a public meeting about the Red Line Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The meeting will be at the Big Car Tube Factory at 1125 Cruft St., Indianapolis, IN 46203.

There will be a short presentation at 6:30 p.m.
