Toxicology results still pending in suspect’s death

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – The reason for the cause of death of an Edinburgh man who died after running away from police and swimming across a river is still pending after an autopsy.

According to 24-Hour News 8’s partners, The Columbus Republic, the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s said they were still waiting on toxicology results before posting a statement regarding the cause of death of 44-year-old Robert Quick.

Quick was pronounced dead at Columbus Regional Hospital Monday around 9:22 p.m.

Police said because of Quick’s underlying medical conditions, it could have caused an issue depending on what investigators find in the toxicology results.

According to Indiana State Police Detectives, Monday around 8:30 p.m., the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department was sent to the 5100 block of North County Road 250 West in Bartholomew County after reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Police said when they arrived on scene, they saw a white 1996 Dodge van traveling in the area. As they followed the van, they said it came to a stop, then a backseat passenger, Robert Quick, 44 of Edinburgh, fled from the van and ran on foot. Quick then got into the Driftwood River and swam across to the opposite side. When he reached the opposite side, police said he began having medical difficulties and collapsed.

An officer made it across the river and found Quick unresponsive. Medics were called and he was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police later found Quick was wanted on multiple warrants out of Johnson and Bartholomew Counties.

Bartholomew County records show police were looking for Quick after failure to appear on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of paraphernalia.

Court records indicate Quick failed to appear for a pretrial hearing in Bartholomew Superior Court 2 on June 15 and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
