Red Cross urges community to give blood for Trauma Awareness Month

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) – In honor of May being Trauma Awareness Month, the American Red Cross is asking the community to give blood or platelets.

According to a release, the blood or platelets donated will be given to trauma patients and others with serious medical needs.

The Red Cross said they provide blood to approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide, including 80 hospitals in Indiana.

“It’s the blood products on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager of the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region. “When seconds matter, having a readily available blood supply is critical to trauma patient care.”

Those with type O negative blood and type AB plasma are encouraged to donate as often as they are eligible. The Red Cross said they are asking for type O negative blood and type AB plasma because they can be given to patients with any blood type.
