Video shows EF-1 tornado damage on city’s southeast side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has confirmed that a tornado did cause damage on the southeast side of Indianapolis Saturday evening.

The tornado was rated an EF-1, with estimated winds around 90 mph.

The damage was located near Southeastern Avenue and Irvington Avenue in southeast Marion County, where the tornado briefly touched down.

There was significant garage damage to two homes, and there were two automobiles that were stacked on top of each other.

Chopper 8 flew over the scene on Monday morning.

Numerous trees were down, blocking areas. The tornado was likely on the ground for less than one minute.

There was not a tornado warning issued for the storm, however there was a severe thunderstorm warning issued for the storm. The National Weather Service says the storm path was three tenths of a mile long and only lasted for one minute.

Meteorologist Daniel McCarthy with the National Weather Service said, “There are a couple of trees behind this house that are almost across each other almost in a X fashion, which means there was some convergence in the air which does indicate some rotation.” McCarthy added, “It looks like there was some impact into the house and they’re really lucky enough that it was fast enough that it didn’t rip off the roof.”

No injuries have been reported because of the tornado.
