Sarah Fisher’s new karting facility opening in Speedway

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) – A brand new 60,000 square foot karting facility is coming to Speedway.

Plans on the new attraction at Main and 16th Streets came out Thursday. The idea is to make Main Street in Speedway a destination all year round. With the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the museums and the restaurants, Speedway Indoor Karting would give visitors and residents one more thing to get excited about.

Former race car driver Sarah Fisher made the announcement Thursday afternoon. With a restaurant and two indoor tracks, including a banked oval, they hope to draw race fans old and new.

“Kart racing is important because it’s the basis of auto racing careers. Driving engineering is where it all begins,” Fisher said. “Not only is driving important in our industry but educating some of the young kids who want to get into the industry who have no other connection.”

Across the street from the new karting facility is Charlie Brown’s Pancakes and Steaks. Owner Elizabeth Glover has seen a lot of change over the last 40 years and the indoor tracks will be a welcomed addition to Main Street.

“It’s good, clean fun here in Speedway. Racing is good clean fun and a lot of people love racing and we’re offering more and more to the families,” said Glover.

And for neighbors like Janet Webster, more people, not just in May, is good for Speedway.

“I’ve lived here 25 years and I’ve seen Main Street when it’s quiet and desolate,” said Webster. “It’s great they are redeveloping the area. It’s just an increased value to our homes.”

The plan is to have the facility up and running by April 1, 2016, right before the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.  It will also create more than 40 new jobs.
