1 horse dies, another rescued from southern Indiana pond

NEWBURGH, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say one horse drowned and another horse was saved after the animals fell through an icy pond in far southern Indiana.

The Warrick County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened about 6:45 a.m. on Monday. Officials say the horses wandered from their fenced-in area and found themselves on top of the pond before falling through the ice.

Firefighters responded and found one horse struggling in the water. Responders were able to save the horse. Sheriff’s officials say the horse’s owner took the animal back to its barn and warmed it up.

Newburgh is just east of Evansville.
