Snow hits Indiana; 6-8 inches reported in Lafayette
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A strong storm system arrived in central Indiana overnight Tuesday and it’ll last through a good part of the day Thursday.
Snow reports between 6″ – 8″ have all ready been reported around the Lafayette area as of 5:00 p.m. Heavy snow bands will continue to move east throughout the evening.
Dozens of Indiana counties issued blizzard warnings and winter storm warnings as rain began turning to snow Wednesday morning. As a result of the storm, a number of school districts in the state decided to dismiss early.
Hamilton County issued a yellow travel advisory for unincorporated roads in their county Wednesday morning. Officials said the advisory would remain in effect until further notice.
The system started out bringing moderate to heavy rain Wednesday morning. By 4 a.m., there were heavy downpours and strong winds moving through downtown Indianapolis, making it difficult to see lane lines. As colder air arrived Wednesday, a wintry mix started transitioning to snow.
Indiana State Police have urged motorists to please not call police for road conditions. Statewide travel information is available at trafficwise.in.gov or by calling 1-800-261-ROAD (7623).
The latest snowfall potential map shows that the heaviest snow looks to set up in northwestern and northern Indiana. Snow totals will sharply cut off once you get to southeast Indiana. Snow will gradually end Thursday.
This forecast is a challenge for figuring out where the heavy snow will cut off, and if some warm air will lower some of the snow totals in the Indianapolis metro area.
About 96 snow force drivers will hit the road around 11 p.m. on Wednesday and will remain on the roads until Thursday morning or afternoon.
