I-65 back open in Boone County after 50-vehicle crash
LEBANON, Ind. (WISH) – Northbound lanes of I-65 near SR 32 in Lebanon were closed for hours Sunday as emergency crews responded to numerous crashes.
Indianan State Police say 50 to 60 vehicles were involved in crashes near mile marker 140.
The crashes closed the northbound lanes of I-65 around 1:30 p.m. The lanes were reopened around 6 p.m.
ISP says weather was the likely culprit leading to the crash.
“People didn’t slow down,” said John Perrine with ISP. “The visibility changed, the road surface changed, however, people kept driving way too fast. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of slowing down, when the weather gets like this.”
According to ISP, 30 people were transported to the hospital with injuries, but none of the injuries were serious.
“I’ve seen minor accidents but nothing like all these cars,” said Carlie Crain, who witnessed crash. “The cars were into the walls. and there’s just pieces of things everywhere.”
ISP says the worst injury was a broken leg.
“Semis turned sideways and cars. Pieces all over the road. We saw people walking up the exit ramp to go to the McDonald’s to go to the restroom,” said Crain.
Westbound I-70 in Putnam County was also closed for hours Sunday after crashes involved around 50 vehicles.WEATHER RESOURCES
